Photo agency Getty Images has announced the winners of its annual Instagram Grant, which awards winners with $10,000 and mentorship from an in-house expert photojournalist.

This year, Saumya Khandelwal, Isadora Kosofsky and Nina Robinson took home the prize.

The competition, now in its third year, aims to shine a light on underrepresented communities – as a way of raising awareness of unknown issues.

Khandelwal hails from India, where she has been working as a photojournalist for Reuters. Most of her work focuses on social issues such as gender and the environment. Her winning project Child Brides of Shravasti looked at the lives of Indian girls forced into early arranged marriages – the devastating reality of which is documented on her Instagram account.

Kosofsky is an LA-based documentary photographer and filmmaker, specializing in American issues. Most of her works are portraits which span various topics like poverty, mental health and substance abuse, but it was her pictures of underage prisoners that caught the jury’s attention. While Robinson – Instagram account here – is also from the US but she bases her work on family life in rural Arkansas. Although her images originally centered on her own family, she then expanded the project to focus on African-American people.

Swedish photographer Nora Lorek was also commended with the Honourable Mention, following her work on the South Sudanese refugees in Uganda.

All work will be featured at the Getty Images Gallery in London until November 4 but to view the full portfolios, visit Where We Stand
