Director Blink My Brain (aka, Ariel Costa) creates Horse Power, a unique vision of the past, present, and future for BMW.
This three-minute collage is a launch film for BMW China’s new bilibili channel. Bilibili is a video-sharing site, part streaming service, part TikTok, much like YouTube, with a focus on animation, games, and collaboration. This piece shows off a fantastic visual aesthetic with a slow palette change depending on the era of history.
The piece is a pastiche of youthful cut-out animation and tongue-in-cheek history. There’s a distinct style here, as the narrator calls the chariot “the first Gundam,” and the combustion engine “the first EVA01,” (anime references, and big enough that even Western audiences should recognize the nod) and combines textures, cut-out illustrations, newspaper clippings, and old photographs to create a story that feels like an art piece much more than an ad.
The film was produced by Final Frontier and shows off the talent of a massive team of specialized designers and animators who coalesced around Costa in the intense 6-week production. The tight timeline made use of the "24-hour pipeline,” where Final Frontier liaised with the agency throughout the day in China, and then worked overnight in North and South America to execute the design and animation.
Costa says, “I planned the whole piece as if it were a book full of contrasts, combining vintage and modern elements. The sum of old and new helped us to create the contrast that we were looking for. I wanted to make sure that we could represent BMW’S past, present, and future living in the same timeline. All infused with beautiful Chinese culture. We ended up creating over 80 unique mixed media shots with diverse styles but the same storyline.”
