In a remarkably charming and beautifully animated ad for Childline, a young yarn-creature dresses in a teenage suit to go to school, fighting to stay disguised throughout the day.
A young shadow puts on a very realistic human disguise and heads to school. While there, he can’t seem to keep everything under control, and parts of his true self-dark blue, spinny, strange, keep threatening to burst out of his clothing. At the dance he looks around at his totally normal and not monstrous classmates, and watches as a young girl gets crowned the dancehall queen...only she suddenly bursts out of her own human-dress and everyone sees the kind of creature she is. At the end of Nobody is Normal, the whole student body takes off their masks one by one, showing off in brilliant, rich hues exactly the kind of strange, bizarre, unique creatures they are.

The film is gorgeously made, a true stop-motion piece of claymation that utilizes a variety of textures and scenarios wonderfully. The behind-the-scenes featurette (below) shows off the rigs, detail, and painting that went into this film, which was a handmade creation through and through. Radiohead’s Creep was provided as a track, tying in nostalgia and current impact, making the ad instantly relatable as everyone recalls their own memories singing along to the radio years ago, or even last week.
Ad agency The Gate worked hard to strike the balance between advocacy and style, making ChildLine’s newest ad touching and uplifting at the same time. Directed by Catherine Prowse of Blink Productions, the film’s animation and extraordinarily relatable story make it stand apart.
