EXHIBITION
Carolina Zorrilla de San Martín’s photography exhibition, ART IN THE SHADOW OF DEATH has debuted at the Farmani Gallery in Los Angeles
Accomplished photographer, cinematographer and director Carolina Zorrilla de San Martín presents ART IN THE SHADOW OF DEATH, a pictorial-cum-documentary and book project that manifests the ultimate in machismo: The testosterone-soaked art of bullfighting.
This body of work is eloquently described by author Malina Saval. “Lensed in manual medium-format Hasselblad, the photographer’s sepia-tinted images of the adrenaline-laden, gold-spangled spectacle of Spanish matadors in the bullring present a multi-pronged juxtaposition of life versus death, of blood-spattered ghastliness and balletic, life-flushed beauty. Choosing sepia as a hue to maintain cohesiveness, the colors remain so bountiful – rich reds, glimmering golds, bold blacks – they melt through the image, pulsating with the electric warmth of dying bull’s blood.”
With a Bachelor’s degree in photography from RISD and a blossoming career in cinematography, commercial and film directing, Carolina presents a stunning and passionate look at her native Spain. Her rich images portray the thrill of the fight such that the viewer becomes a participant in the centennial event. Zorrilla de San Martín’s pursuit of beauty combines seamlessly with her European sensibility to create the photographs of ART IN THE SHADOW OF DEATH.
Conducting a bicoastal career, Carolina currently calls Los Angeles home.
The exhibition is open until November 30.
