With a painterly quality, Drawn from Experience is a haunting account of the underreported perspectives affected by lockdown.
Using rough voiceovers recorded from telephone calls, people call in to explain what they have had to go through over the past year. From Syrian refugees living in Turkey contemplating a return to Aleppo to a young man from Honduras explaining how the pandemic affected the already destitute poor, each new voice in Drawn from Experience shares an underreported story of struggle. Each story is an impassioned plea for understanding, these people want the viewer to bear witness, to know, to see.
At the end of the piece is a mention of resilience and hope. People are strong because of what hurts them. For The Nation, director Rafe Scobey Thal expertly navigates finding the heart of each story while not exploiting any person for their trauma. Animator Luca Valente created the art that makes up the film.
