With the help of an all-female crew, British music artist RAYE has directed this intimate, biographical promo through KODE, for her new song Ice Cream Man.
Captured in one continuous shot, the film sees the artist entering a public bathroom, visibly upset. Finding solace in the privacy of a cubicle, she finally feels safe to break down in tears.
The lyrics speak of her experience with sexual violence and the impact it has had, and is clearly still having on her life, as well as mentioning the unhealthy ways she learned to cope with the stress of keeping it all bottled up.
Towards the end of the video, RAYE taps into her inner strength, slowly beginning to collect herself and wiping her eyes before quietly leaving the restroom. The everyday mundanity of the set and Raye’s stripped-back appearance allows the full focus of the film to fall on her raw, emotional performance and powerful lyrics.
"1 in 3 women experience sexual violence in their lifetime. 1 in 4 men experience sexual violence in their lifetime. 1 in 2 transgenders will experience sexual violence in their lifetime," explains Raye. "Which means, that at least 25% of those reading this statement have been victims of sexual violence. If I can encourage anything, let’s not bury it deep down inside us forever.
"This evil has more power over us in the darkness, than it does in the light."
