There are certain people - John F. Kennedy, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Wangari Maathai - who, when they talk, you listen.

Collecting together 23 such titans of inspiration, Clemenger BBDO have created Our Defining Moment, an incredibly constructed mega-mix speech aiming to rally all generations to come together as Gen Less, a movement to counter climate change.

Amassing together the images and words of... deep breath... Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank, Carl Sagan, Dame Whina Cooper, Eleanor Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Kofi Annan, Lady Bird Johnson, Mahatma Gandhi, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr, Mother Teresa, Neil Armstrong, Nelson Mandela, Princess Diana Spencer, Richard Feynman, Robert F. Kennedy, Sir Edmund Hillary, Stephen Hawking, Wangari Maathai and Winston Churchill, the spot manages to impressively capture recognisable soundbites from each whilst simultaneously making a coherent call to arms.

Commissioned by EECA (New Zealand’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority), and created in collaboration with creative agency Clemenger BBDO and animation house Assembly, the project is aiming for a shift in mindset of everybody, asking all to get more out of life by using less energy.

“We set out to make action on climate change something people will want to do, not just be obliged to do," explains EECA Communications and Engagement Manager, Jane O’Loughlin." Gen Less is a challenge to New Zealanders to scrutinise our decisions as individuals, and as a society, to rethink our collective approach to energy – from the smaller steps in our daily lives, to the larger systemic shifts we need to make together.”

You can read the full, incredible speech here (including who's saying what) and can find out more about the movement on the site - GenLess.govt.nz.
