Mardi Gras in New Orleans conjures up colourful images of noise, music and joyful excess, but this haunting new film from the city's Tourism Marketing Corporation depicts a very different side to the legendary party.
Created by ad agency 360i, the film follows a group of eerie figures dressed as skeletons and brandishing bones, as they file through the silent mausoleums and vacant early morning streets of the Tremé neighbourhood, culminating in an ominous knock on a door. But despite appearances, this is no vigilante march; the surreal ritual is part of a 200-year tradition by the Northside Skull and Bone Gang, whose mission is to spread a message of peace and encourage the residents to reject violence.
The spot was directed by filmmaker Victoria Rivera, who has also created a full-length documentary about the Gang.
