Family-focussed festivals can always bring on big emotions, as this gorgeously animated and touching short for Airbnb goes to prove.
Telling the story of Jia Jia and her family throughout their annual New Year celebrations, Final Frontier and Taiko Studios' film tugs on the heartstrings as child and family are separated due to work commitments... only for a handy Airbnb to save the day.
Titled Fú (meaning ‘blessing’) after the traditional banner that is hung upside down, the film release coincides with the announcement that Taiko Studios will join Final Frontier’s roster in Asia and South America.

Helmed by former Disney animator and Taiko Studios founder Shaofu Zhang, the production was brought to life with teams in Los Angeles and Wuhan (China).
As Final Frontier executive producer Chris Colman explains,“We were excited to work with Airbnb on this project, and Shaofu immediately came to mind when we received the brief. He and his team had that unique combination of genuine Chinese cultural insight combined with world-class storytelling sensibility and cutting edge execution developed over the years with Disney. It was the perfect fit.”
“The project was immediately personal to us," comments Zhang. "Much of our team in Wuhan is around the same age as the protagonist and we realized that many of us had the same experience of missing Chinese New Year at home. It was such a good fit for us because of how closely we identified with the core message of home and family.”
Speaking of the animation style, he adds: “Airbnb was very supportive of creating a non-photoreal art style that felt painterly and handmade…The biggest challenge was creating the dry brushed edge feel for a 3D environment and retain the graphic and 2D look. We partnered with MNPRX to help us develop a system that could achieve the style we were looking for.
"The difficulty was that we were already in production as we were figuring out how to apply this look, so it was like laying down the track while we were driving the train. Thanks to our amazing team, we were able to find the right feel and achieve a unique look that felt like a moving illustration.”
