James Squire pioneered an extraordinary life. Convicted of stealing in 1785 he was transported to Australia as a convict on the First Fleet in 1788. But his chancer’s spirit carried him from infamy to the splendour of his own brewery.
He’s credited with the first successful cultivation of hops in Australia and founded the country’s first commercial brewery making beer from barley and hops in 1798.
Created by Milk & Honey United and directed by Justin McMillan, through Fortress Films, the spot Ordinary Be Damned was shot on location in Tasmania.
While the voiceover from Rory McCann (GoT's The Hound) describes an undistinguished life of a common man, the epic visuals tell a very different story, depicting Squire's not inconsiderable swagger, along with his appreciation of a fine drop of booze.
