This moving music video for Scottish singer songwriter Lewis Capaldi’s new song, Pointless, tells a heartbreaking story of a single mother and her son as they live through the ups and downs of daily life in financial hardship.
The film, directed by Hector Dockrill through Pulse Films, follows lead actress Niamh Algar, who plays a young working mum trying her best to give her son the life she wished she could have had.
Touching on themes that feel sadly more relevant than ever, the narrative shows her going without food to make sure her son was fed and struggling to afford to keep the electricity on, whilst trying to make memories with what little they have.
With emotional and intimate storytelling, the film gives us a glimpse into their lives, spanning from the son’s childhood to his late teenage years. In a touching closing scene, we see him as an adult moving out of his childhood home, as his mother proudly looks on with teary eyes.
Director Dockrill said “Lewis had a beautiful idea that focused on the mother/son bond, and how responsibility shifts as you grow older. Niamh Algar is a phenomenal talent and we’re already chomping at the bit to work together again. With only a week’s prep, she managed to immerse herself into the role and completely make it her own. This is definitely a special film that everybody can connect with – a shout out to every mother.”
