Postpartum Depression is not one of those things that we talk about, but this short film from Pam Thomas wants to change that.
As new mothers step out, sing, do chores, and dance to perfectly choreographed pram pushing one woman is...off. Offbeat, out of step, confused. PPD effects different women differently, but among the pretty pinks and mom jeans, it’s obvious that something is going wrong. Mom Genes is a PSA that is effective and punchy. It’s bright and strangely Stepford, pulling you in with a catchy song and dance.
Mom Genes works because it’s bizarre and strange and evokes isolation without being accusatory. The way that PPD is depicted is not villainizing or shameful; it’s just scary. With pepto-bismol production from Community Films, director Pam Thomas captures the horror of mental illness without making it horrific.
