Has anyone in the history of cravats ever rocked a neckerchief quite like Prince did?
Of course not, in fact, did anyone ever rock anything quite like Prince Rogers Nelson? That hair, the frills, the sumptuous fabrics, the general funky fabulousness – this excellent animation directed by Aaron Lampert and produced by Electric Light Studios, is a welcome reminder of what Prince brought to the 80s.
The song, Holly Rock, was written in 1985, performed originally by Sheila E and featured in the hip-hop movie Krush Groove. Lampert’s reference material included Alter Ego, a Prince comic book from 1991, created by Dwayne McDuffie and Denys Cowan.
“Krush Groove and the early hip-hop influence was the inspiration for the graffiti sections” reveals Lampert, “lots of the graffiti is Prince’s actual handwriting, taken directly from his original handwritten lyrics provided by his estate. I isolated individual words and phrases and then processed them to give them the appropriate look.”
