Since the 50s, being a teenager has been associated with palling around with buddies, mustering the courage to talk to crushes, and worrying about getting a smooch on prom night.

However, the crushing reality for the current generation of teens in America, returning to school after a year of the most gun violence on record, is that life and death are more pressing concerns than likes or zits.

Subverting Katy Perry’s famous ode to adolescent innocence, BBDO New York's latest for Sandy Hook Promise, Teenage Dream, re-records the track with real school shooting survivors reciting the lyrics, emotively illustrating how the dream can be stolen.

Sensitively helmed by Henry-Alex Rubin of SMUGGLER (partnering with BBDO NY and SHP for the fifth time), the film's real punch comes from its second half; the participants revealing the devastating circumstances by which they survived their attacks in a relentless, heartbreaking series of poignant tableaux.
