With an upbeat track and pop-synth aesthetic, Dependent is a fun, wall-breaking music video full of confessional asides and BFFs who know he’s no good.
With fun visuals and a dedication to the London party aesthetic, Mae Muller gives us a trippy descent into her decision making as she argues with herself, trying to find a happy balance between a new boyfriend and her independence. With quick costume changes, absolutely top-of-the-line set design, and fun choreography, Dependent is a slide into the surreal as we watch a young woman explore what she stands to gain, and what she could lose.
Sophia Ray, director on the roster at Partizan, commented, “I loved working with Mae, she has so much personality so working with her on developing the creative of the video was a real treat. The whole video is a hyper-real voyage through Mae’s subconscious as she argues with herself about whether a relationship is right for her. The dancers in the piece perform as extended versions of Mae, constantly niggling at her, and hindering her decisions—like her cautious subconscious trickling through as she tries to follow her heart.”
