The last Volkswagen Beetle was produced in mid-2019 and at the end of the year the brand released a touching animated tribute to the car.

As a young boy watches his father come home in a Beetle, The Last Mile shares the story of a shared lifetime with an unforgettable car. The young boy grows up, falls in love, starts his own family, and at the center of it, the Beetle stays with him. The final stretch of road has iconic Beetle lovers and fans, from Footloose’s Ren McCormack to Andy Warhol, lining the streets. The Beetle is sent off, transforming into a lightning bug, lighting the way for the next generation.

The use of music - a new recording of The Beatles’ Let it Be by the Pro Musica Youth Chorus - gives the ad a resonance beyond the cute nods to past campaigns and nostalgia. The animation, produced by Nexus Studios, sticks to a pale, limited color palette, evoking a soft sentimentality for the vehicle. Helmed by Johannes Leonardo and directed by Fx Goby, The Last Mile is a love letter to an old friend, without a consolation prize, celebrating what made the VW Beetle so beloved for the past seven decades.
