During the pandemic, almost 3.5 million mothers in the US had their work lives turned upside-down after losing their jobs or having to care for children in remote learning situations.

This pause from work – either by choice or necessity – caused women to re-examine their relationship to work.

JOAN Creative's campaign aims to encourage mothers to realise the skills, qualities and sheer gumption they need to gestate, give birth to and then care for their offspring well equips them to handle the demands of running their own companies.

The centrepiece of the digital first #MomsMeanBusiness campaign is a moving film, You Can Because You Did, directed by Emilie Thalund, through Bacon, that opens with a woman enduring the tribulations of labour, while a voiceover tells her, “You can’t do this.”

Something she eventually overcomes by telling herself that she actually… guess what? She can. And if she can get through childbirth she can get through anything.

Closing with the call to action to mums to: “Start a business. Change the world. We've got your back," the film was created by a team of many working mothers, including the director, editor, colourist and lead actor.
