Is it a mini rom-com, is it a promo? Does it matter?
Whatever it is, this stupendous, reality-bending film for Liar, the latest track from US/Cuban singer-songwriter Camila Cabello, is a delicious candy-coloured confection that interrupts the music with comic scripted scenes.
Directed by Dave Meyers and produced by RadicalMedia/USA, it follows the tale of a woman tussling with her own reality – does she love her insufferable tosspot of a millionaire fiancé… or the penniless waiter at the fancy restaurant they eat in?
It fizzes with the phantasmagorical fun of a Michel Gondry work; offering falling elephants, cartoon tweety-birds, bulging eyeballs and flocks of pink flamingos, malevolent drones and collapsing cyclists.
A Greek chorus-like trio of gossip newscasters break into the music with droll commentary on the girl’s progress and eventual fall “from riches to rags, from Zuckerberg to down on his luck-a-berg.”
